Blog 1 2018
The Edge Festival looms ever closer. The first weekend in August will see the biggest festival yet. This will be the fourth time Solva has entertained guests from not just Pembrokeshire and Wales but also from as far afield as Australia. The festival has done a huge part in raising the profile of the north Pembrokeshire peninsula and also raising funds for our local charities and projects. Over £13,000 has gone to organisations as diverse as the Memory Cafe in St Davids, Porthmawr Lifesavers, Solva AFC, Solva Watersports and Rowing Club, the list goes on. Our last initiative was to create a bursary for a deserving young person to help further their career or undertake an interesting initiative. In times of increasing austerity, we have seen services cut and our community charge being raised by 12.5% in 2018, it’s great to reverse the trend and give financial support to deserving causes.
But the festival is not just about raising money. We aim to to give our locals and visitors a great weekend of fun and challenges. The Swim to the Edge is now internationally recognised and has nearly sold out with four months still to go. A great deal of credit must go to ManUpUK, our partners, for running this demanding swim of 2.4miles — the only one in the UK where participants head straight out to sea.
If swimming isn’t for you, then try football or rugby, we have fun competitions in both.
The Festival has become a big logistical exercise. The stage, the centre point of the maes, or festival field, has to be ordered a year in advance. We have to source tents — this year Threadform who supplied some tents last year, will now provide just about all of them. Emma, who runs Threadform, actually makes these super structures herself. It’s some experience to be able to sit in a real canvas tent and feel the breeze, supping a local craft beer or sipping a gin that has been designed especially for the Edge by gin maker Alex of Welsh Wind Gin. Whilst listening to great music, of course.
We have a diverse running order of bands and poets. We have cooking demonstrations, sea shore safaris, river walks and bat hunts. And a huge bouncy castle.
Make sure you are part of it, book your early bird tickets now, Solva is looking forward to meeting you.
